Mohamed Shareef
Former Minister of State for Environment, Climate Change and Technology, Maldives
Mohamed Shareef is a distinguished public servant with a strong background in government, academia and international organizations. He recently completed his term as the Minister of State for Environment, Climate Change, and Technology, leading the government’s Digital Development Plan 2021-2023. This initiative focuses on laying the groundwork for digital transformation in the island nation, including the establishment of a digital identity platform for verification and data sharing. He is also driving the creation of regulatory frameworks for data protection, cybersecurity, and national digital transformation. He heads the National Center for Information Technology (NCIT).
Prior to this appointment, he was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communication, Science, and Technology. He served as the CIO and deputy to the CEO of NCIT for nearly a decade. He also contributed to the Maldives Qualification Authority and was an academic leader at Cyryx College. He gained international experience at the Center for Electronic Governance, UNU-IIST, China, working on global projects and publishing research in electronic government. Elected Chair of the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway Initiative’s Steering Committee, he strives to bridge digital divides in the region.
